Helping
is always in season
by The Herald Staff
ASU HERALD 11/25/02 -- Complaining; whining; fighting
about money, buildings, raises and tuition. These are many of the
things people on this campus have been doing lately. This holiday
season we all need to take a moment to concentrate on the needs
of someone else.
There are many people on campus and in our community
that need some help, or even just some extra attention during the
holidays. Studies have shown that suicide rates go up during Thanksgiving
and Christmas. Sometimes the standards our society has created for
a "happy holiday season" are just unbearable for those
who don't think their lives measure up to the norm.
Here are few things you can do to lend a helping
hand:
1. Santa's Tribe is a group of ASU employees that
helps other ASU families throughout the year, but they give the
most at Christmas-time. Offices or student organizations that want
to adopt a family should contact the president of the committee,
Mary Beth Jones, at 972-2066. Boxes for canned food donations will
be set up this week in buildings all over campus. Santa's Tribe
is completely anonymous.
2. The Angel Tree is sponsored by the Honors Association.
It helps underprivileged children receive gifts for Christmas. The
tree is located in the Dean B. Ellis Library. Anyone or any organization
can choose an angel from the tree. The angel represents one child.
Each angel carries a request for a piece of clothing or one toy
for each child.
3. The African Students Association is holding
a "Books for African Universities" drive. They are asking
for new and used textbooks in all disciplines and subjects to distribute
to students in African universities in need. They have set up drop-off
boxes in the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership in the
Reng Center, Laboratory Science West room 552, Agriculture building
room 218, Fine Arts room 104, Wilson Hall room 405, Office of the
Dean of the School of Business, and Math and Computer Science room
104.

Jonesboro Chamber of Commerce Web site at http://jonesboro.dina.org/calendar/acalendar.
Please find a way to give to others during this
holiday season. There are people in need all around you, please
take the time to find them.
